How can better data and stronger financial institutions unlock sustainable investment in the livestock sector? 🐐 🐄 🐔
From 9 to 11 June, the Agri-PDB Platform attended the Closing Workshop for the FAO technical assistance project to CILSS on training nine West African countries in the Livestock Sector Investment and Policy Toolkit (LSIPT) and the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM-i). The workshop, held in Accra, #Ghana, showcased how these tools have been used to develop country-level investment cases, allowing participants to assess the socio-economic and environmental impacts of livestock-sector interventions, including effects on production, income, vulnerability, profitability and greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of its mission to strengthen the capacities and tools of national public development banks (PDBs) to finance, scale, and sustain transformative food systems, the Platform was pleased to accompany two of its most active members: BNDA Mali and CDC Bénin. We were grateful for the valuable participation of Mr. Anzoumana SIDIBE and Mr. Sidy Mahambé TOURE from BNDA Mali, as well as Mr. Djidjoho Romuald ALLAGBE and Mr. Morest AGOSSADOU, PhD from CDC Benin, who delivered insightful presentations on their banks’ livestock portfolios and actively contributed to the panel discussion and challenges and opportunities to unlock livestock finance by bringing concrete perspectives offering feedback on the potential of the LSIPT and GLEAM-i tools.
The participating PDBs expressed strong interest in both tools which they consider very useful, especially for advocacy, strategic planning, donor dialogue, and identifying high-impact livestock investments. However, both banks agreed that the tool would need to be adapted to fully respond to their needs to improve the banks' engagement in the sector. ▶️ Watch the video and listen to both representatives sharing more about their experience exploring LSIPT and GLEAM-i tools.
The Agri-PDB Platform sincerely thanks Manon Hamon and Ugo Pica-Ciamarra from FAO Livestock for the invitation us and for creating a valuable space for exchange with representatives of the National Bank for Agricultural Development of Mali and the Benin Deposit and Consignment Fund on advancing livestock-sector planning and investment.
